RAF Typhoon fighter aircraft have operated alongside France's air force in a coordinated attack on an subterranean weapons facility in Syria used by the IS group, per a report from the British defence ministry.

The location, located using intelligence, was believed to be containing munitions and bombs, the announcement noted, and was positioned in mountainous terrain just north of the historic site of Palmyra in the heart of Syria.

"The RAF jets employed laser-guided Paveway IV weapons to strike a several entry passages down to the facility... preliminary assessments indicate the strike was effective," the ministry announced.

There was no indication of any harm to civilians in the operation conducted Saturday night and all the aircraft returned safely, the MoD added.

The Typhoon FGR4s were assisted by a Voyager refuelling tanker.

Daesh - alternatively referred to as Daesh - established militant control over significant areas in Syria and Iraq until 2019.

"This action underscores our UK leadership, and commitment to work closely with allied nations, to eradicate any re-emergence of Daesh and their harmful and extremist ideologies in the region," UK Defence Secretary John Healey said.

UK warplanes have conducted overwatch operations over Syria to "prevent any efforts to regroup" of the group subsequent to its defeat at the Baghuz confrontation in 2019, the ministry said.

"I extend gratitude to the personnel of British forces who took part in this operation for their skill and their bravery," he commented. "They were part of thousands of British troops on duty over the holidays. This operation, to eliminate dangerous terrorists who threaten our safety, highlights how UK forces are always on standby, all year round, keeping Britain secure at home and influential overseas."

Last December, the US military carried out what it called a "large-scale strike" on Islamic State objectives in the country, following an attack claimed the lives of two US troops and a civilian linguist in the Palmyra area.

The United Nations estimates Daesh still has between 5,000 and 7,000 militants in both countries.
