Fierce Gales Cause Tens of Thousands In the Dark in New Zealand

Storm damage in New Zealand

Severe gales reaching velocities of approximately 155km/h (96mph) have caused around 90,000 homes lacking electricity and compelled authorities to cancel in excess of 100 flights, based on domestic outlets.

These gusts are affecting the whole southern region and southern sections of the North Island, per the country's meteorological service.

New Zealand authorities have announced rare red wind warnings - the most severe warning - in central regions such as Wellington and Canterbury.

Residents have been advised to stay indoors, stay off roads, and make arrangements for more electricity and network failures.

Widespread Damage and Emergency Response

The electricity loss is primarily influencing households predominantly in the South Island, although officials state that power was being slowly brought back.

Regional news have reported that in some places homes have lost their roofs, while utility poles and vegetation have been brought down by the winds.

In Wellington, a man was killed after being struck by a tree branch at a frequent walking route on earlier this week.

Additionally in the city, a woman was blown onto moving cars on a road by a powerful blast, in a event that was captured in a viral dashcam video.

Air travel in and out of the city have been cancelled due to the gusts, whereas certain highways and community centers are not operating.

Meanwhile Canterbury officials have declared a state of emergency, to facilitate recovery activities.

Strike Action During Harsh Weather

The powerful gales on this day occur while tens of thousands of school staff, physicians and civil servants are engaged in what has been termed a "major walkout", demanding higher wages and enhanced employment terms.

But the severe conditions has pressured them to modify certain arrangements, with several external protests relocated inside or called off.

Like conditions are also sweeping the neighboring country, causing a period of extreme heat to the country's outback.

Authorities have declared fire bans for concern about forest fires.
