TikTok Grants Viewers Authority to Decrease AI-Generated Content in Timelines

The platform is rolling out a new feature that permits them to lessen the volume of AI-made media appearing in their streams. This initiative comes as the service revealed that it now features in excess of 1 bn AI videos.

Trial and Implementation

The new functionality is undergoing trials over the coming weeks before a widespread launch. This development aligns with a rise in AI content, fueled by recent AI video creators.

AI Content on Other Platforms

It has been noted that almost 10% of the quickest rising content creators on another major platform primarily display content made by AI. A large amount of this material is classified as “AI slop”, a phrase for poor-quality, mass-produced content that is often nonsensical or dreamlike.

“We know from our community that many people enjoy content produced via AI tools, ranging from computer-generated images to science explainers, and we aim to provide users the power to adjust the amount of that, depending on their own preferences,” commented a company executive.

AI on the Platform

The platform announced that there are currently 1.3 billion videos on its network labeled as AI-generated. Collectively, more than 100 m pieces of content are added to the app every day, making AI content a minor percentage of its total content library.

How to Adjust Settings

Members will be in a position to decrease or raise the amount of artificial media they watch by opening the “manage topic” feature in the platform and selecting AI-made media. Other topics that currently be adjusted under the filter cover current affairs, clothing, beauty, and movement.

Content Labeling and Policies

Its guidelines oblige content makers to identify “realistic” AI-made content, and it prohibits harmful AI impersonations of celebrities or crisis events. Any authentic-looking AI video that is not labeled can be deleted under its user guidelines.

Furthermore, the app will henceforth apply an AI-generated tag to content made using its built-in AI features, or flagged by an industry-wide initiative for identifying AI-generated material. This measure is designed to deter users from seeking to bypass the labeling process.

AI Literacy Programs

TikTok is also establishing a $2 million AI literacy fund for professionals and organizations to produce informative material about ethical AI use. This program will benefit educational bodies dedicated to teaching programming and robotics.

Content Safety Approach

The video-sharing app has justified its moderation strategy, amid debate over plans to lay off a large number of content moderators in Britain. The company is planning to reduce a significant number of roles in its trust and safety division in the UK capital, with labor groups and digital protection specialists raising concerns that people are being substituted by automated systems.

A senior executive clarified that human moderation would continue to be important, but artificial intelligence can safeguard staff by removing the most harmful content before it has to be seen by staff. The company reported a notable drop in shocking and graphic content handled by safety staff over the past year due to the use of its AI tools.

We believe it is crucial to combine people and machines to keep the platform safe,” the official commented. “We’ll have staff as involved in the system, but we additionally believe it’s extremely critical to limit contact with dangerous material as rapidly, which is where a significant AI assistance is really helping us work at speed.”
