The tournament joins the American and Australian Opens in utilizing video review systems.
Replay systems will make its debut at Wimbledon in the upcoming tournament.
Competitors are granted the option to contest particular rulings made by the chair umpire, following the practice currently in place at each of the American Grand Slam and the Aussie major.
The new system will be accessible on Centre Court and the number one court throughout the tournament and on the other four featured courts when they are staging singles matches.
This development arrives only a season following the AELTC introduced electronic line calling, which terminated the longstanding tradition of line judges.
Scope of Challenges
Competitors cannot to dispute the accuracy of the ELC system, but they can ask for the umpire to review other decisions, such as:
- If a tennis ball has double-bounced.
- If a ball made contact with an opponent's racquet or person on the way past.
- Potential hindrance at the conclusion of a point.
Notably, there is no limit on the amount of challenges a competitor can initiate.
Case in Point
An illustrative incident took place in a recent tournament recently, where Daniil Medvedev initiated the review system against his opponent.
The British player conceded it was a difficult call for the official, but thought his rival had "used the regulations quite well."
The umpire viewed a replay and determined Draper was guilty of interference, granting the point to Medvedev.
Wider Implementation
This technology are not new for major tournaments. It was adopted at the US Open since 2023 and the Australian Open since 2025.
Furthermore, it is becoming more common on the WTA circuit, and by the coming year the men's ATP Tour will have the system in place at every one of its tournaments.
Additional Innovations
Another innovation at Wimbledon 2025 will be the introduction of visual indicators on scoreboards to support the verbal announcements from the ELC system.
This solves situations where the crowd have occasionally been unsure whether a shot was out or in.
In other news, with precisely 100 days remaining until the start of the Championships, the AELTC have also announced an expansion in daily capacity at the qualifiers in Roehampton.
